In reality, poverty, stress, violence, competition, and oppression are all around us. In Africa and other third world countries we see people dying of hunger, we see those in power; abuse and beat down people to gain a foothold over their own fellow countrymen. We see everything around us, but we fail to look within ourselves. You are asking ‘why be happy?’ Chances are you are one of the thousands if not millions of people taking or on the verge of being recommended antidepressants. Actually statistics say that 20% of Americans take antidepressants, and overdose of MAOI’s are not uncommon. The American Psychological Association asserts that children 14 and above will start having depressive episodes at least once a year until the age of 30. That is a sad statistic indeed. Sadness leaves a profound effect on the human body and spirit. Humans tend to lean towards negativity because it carries more weight that happiness. The unfortunate thing is that deep rooted sadness is the underlying cause for chronic heart failure, cerebrovascular accidents, apnea, and migraines. Why be happy? Happiness is important to you emotionally and physically! Medical science has shown that being happy triggers hormones that are essential for proper metabolic function and your general well-being. That happy feeling also brings about the positive side of a person. Your happy positive demeanor can be contagious and assist others by shifting their mental outlook from negative to positive. Obviously, your being happy is not just beneficial for only you…but your family, friends, community, etc. What Can You Do? It is important to prevent rather than cure. That is why when the first signs of restlessness ensue it is better to nip that negativity in the nose! Usually when a person feels the first nagging doubt of sadness, the cause is immediately within reaching distance. It is in the present moment and you are more likely to be aware of what is causing you to be unhappy or sad. If you tuck it away, push it back with an “I don’t want to deal with it” approach…you may need to seek a specialized therapist down the road to assist you in finding your path to happiness! You have never reached true success if you have never felt real happiness. As a matter of fact, the United States Declaration of Independence states that ‘happiness and the pursuit thereof is man’s inalienable right’. Even our forefathers had the wisdom and insight of the importance of happiness! Become more self-aware, pursue and find your happiness, TODAY!

It's true a happy person helps both himself and people he comes in touch with. Happiness and warmth of heart are these time-tested factors in human well-being, but it's true we forget these simple truths, and chase big dreams :) I especially liked that part you talk about not tucking away negativity, to deal with it later. Tucking it away leads to complex problems later on, unfortunately.
