![]() If you don’t spend some time off from your busy schedule to treat the problem, then stress will just keep mounting up on you until it will affect you negatively, which could become a problem for your job, business, or personal life. Hello, My name is Cynthia A. Copenhaver, and I am a Work-A-Holic. My family and friends have noticed that I have engaged myself in a whirlwind of activity of busy-ness and have completely lost contact with true social engagement. Yes, I went through the denial stages. I shrugged off their concerns with “I am okay” and “this is normal in starting my own business”. I threw out some mumbled, “Be with you in a minute!”… “Almost done, I think I figured it all out!” and “Hold on…I can’t stop now, I will lose my train of thought…oh damn!” Needless to say… but I will, I have realized that they were right! I was so caught up in trying to educate others on how to manage stress, set goals, and get focused I was quickly losing sight of myself and my family in the midst of my enthusiasm! Ironic, huh? It is very important to integrate a proper stress management into your daily routine to make certain both your mind and body is up to the task connected with addressing the demand of your job. If you are realizing that you are a work-a-holic too, here are some tips that can assist you to get started on the road to recovery. 1.) Small Steps It is impossible to remove your complete stress with just one flick of the wrist! You need to take it slow. Don't rush the process of self-improvement if you would like to benefit from it. Start first by determining the original source of your stress and note them down to help you to take care of them one-by-one. Create a short break from your task and spend some time off to relax a little. Get some fresh air or maybe make yourself some tea/coffee to assist you to calm down away from your work zone. You can’t focus clearly if you are all worked up and looking at what you need to get done next. 2.) Know Your Limits Keep in mind your body has its own limits, even if your mind can overcome the demands or vice versa. You need to realize that your mind is linked with your body and both can digress if you're not careful. Take some time to really focus clearly on your list of stressors. Be realistic in re-prioritizing the list. Often Work-a-holics just presume a high priority on many tasks. These assumptions are false. Literally just in your head, it is not a real deadline. So ask yourself, ‘Is it something that really needs to be done today? Tomorrow? Next week? When?”… “Do I have to do this or can someone else assist me?” Try to narrow your focus down to 3 main goals and branch off from there. Realize that you have control over what limits you set for yourself. This gives you control over your stressors. 3.) Pamper Yourself I know this is a difficult one for work-a-holics to adjust to, but it is a necessity for the healthy state of your mind and body. You might want to start pampering yourself from time to time to help you relax. Perhaps pamper yourself with a massage to help loosen those tight muscles that causes tension to appear in different regions of your body. Enjoy the services of a physical fitness and health spa near you. Myself, I had become remiss on pampering in the past few months. It’s a shame, I know that now. I have learned the errors of my ways. Tonight, I will pamper myself by enjoying a nice glass of wine, look up at the stars, while the jets from the hot tub relax my tension away. One note: I know it is difficult, but if work comes to mind, focus your awareness on something else altogether…become aware of the sights, smells, or sensations about you. This is total pamper self-aware time not self-improvement time.
