![]() All people have dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Fantasizing about being the one who hits the game-winning homerun? Imagining themselves being the homecoming queen? And certainly many of you have dreamed of being rich, successful, or very happy within your relationships at some point of your life? Recently, I had recorded a bunch of video clips of my 13 ½ month old grandson playing on my piano. As a proud grandma, I excitedly uploaded them and set about to create a video for family to see how grown up and talented he was. To my surprise, I had found that I had lots of good video images, but the recorder was on mute! Absolutely, no sound! I watched clip after clip, finding his expressions and body language were telling me more about his dreams than any sound on a video clip ever could. You could see the song that was being played from within and hear it clearly. It made me reflect on the aspirations of dreaming the impossible. Often, you can dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, many dreams remain exactly that – only dreams. And your aspirations easily collect dust in the attic of your subconscious. This is a sad turn of events. Instead of experiencing enjoyable adventures in self- actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day. But you know what? Life may very well be much better, if you learn to effectively establish goals. Scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, many people said, it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Its size and weight structure compared to wing mass would not efficiently give lift against the pull of gravity. Fortunately, no one told the bumble bee this. So it can and does fly quite well. The most common problem to setting goals would be the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking “I could not do this.”… “It's too tricky.”… “It's too impossible.”… “Nobody can do this.” However, if all people thought that, there would possibly be no inventions, no innovations, there would be no breakthroughs in human advancements of any kind! If you limit yourself with self-doubts, and self-limiting assumptions, you will not be able to break past whatever you deem impossible. Try this work out. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals or dreams in your life. First, list down the things ‘You Can Do’. Next, write the things ‘You Might Do. ’ And in third area, list the things that are ‘Impossible To Do. ’ Now look at each of the headers on your lists. Strive every day to achieve the goals that are under things ‘You Can Do’. Check them off when you accomplish them. As you check all of your goals off under that heading, try accomplishing the goals beneath the next list-the one that reads ‘You Might Do. ’ You will notice that you may be able to move these items to your ‘You Can Do’ list now. Logically, you may move some of the goals which are under ‘Impossible To Do’ to the list of things ‘You Might Do. ’ As you review through this, you will find out that goals you thought were impossible become much easier to accomplish due to your new successful achievements. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all. The technique here is not to ever limit your imagination. It is usually to aim high, and start working towards that goal slowly and gradually. Chunk it down into manageable smaller goals. However, it’s unwise to put a goal that is absolutely unrealistic with yourself or is actually someone else’s dream. Those who just dream towards an ambition without being willing to work hard in the end or motivated, will be disappointed and disillusioned. If you told someone a number of years ago that they could instantly see and speak with someone from anywhere in the world using a handheld device, they would’ve laughed at you. If you had told them that you would mail them their favorite novel in just a few minutes, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer motivation and perseverance, these impossible dreams are realities. Thomas Edison once claimed that genius is 1% enthusiasm and 99% perspiration. Nothing may be truer. For one to accomplish their own dreams, there has to be hard work and discipline. But take note, that 1% really needs to be a ‘think-big’ dream, and definitely not some easily accomplished one. So dream on, friend! Don’t get embroiled with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to accomplish those dreams. As you step-up on your ladder of progress, you will learn that the impossible has just become a bit more possible. By the way, I am including the 1:50 min video clip here of that inspiring little piano boy who set me down the path of reflection in the first place!
