![]() Near where I live is a town called Saugatuck, Michigan. This locale has a lot of attractions but my family is drawn often to climb Mt. Baldy's 282-step wooden stairway atop of a stabilized sand dune. Fortunately, the builders had the foresight to create resting spots with benches along your ascent! When I think of my goal setting strategies, I often envision staircases and my memories of past climbs. The earliest were challenging, and I was resting often. Then, I would challenge myself to skip a resting spot or two, forcing myself to keep moving upward. Yes, I was extremely out of breath when I first did this! The pride of doing it though motivates me to do it again and again! I reach the top quicker and easier each time! Another idea to recognize when setting goals is that sometimes you may not be alone. Team goal setting is different and can be frustrating if you want to rush to the top but your partner/s has not built up the stamina to keep up! What do you do? What should you do? Plan out the goal strategy before you take the first step and make sure all agree to it. Using the staircase example above, you agree to stay by your partner's side for encouraging moral support. When a rest is needed, you are able to offer the praise and motivate them onward to your agreed set point on your goal path. This way you both end up at the top! You will gain a lot of insight along that staircase while your partner is resting too. It is fascinating to watch as others are making their climb upwards too. You gain perspective on what works and what definitely does not! It saddens me to see someone begin their journey to the top and half-way there, they give up! Defeated, burned out, afraid to take another step up, and decide to quit! Aargh! I know it can be really challenging taking those steps if you don't have an effective plan of action! Even if you are at that point now of giving up, wait! Look at all of those steps you have already taken! If you quit now, you will still have to re-climb those steps to this point so sit down and rest a moment. Allow yourself to get focused. You started up this staircase with a goal in mind. Regain clarity of that end goal. Reaching the top! Re- evaluate: you can chunk down the next steps and take moments to rest. You can achieve your goal. You have made it this far, haven't you? Think about all of the challenging steps you have already put behind you? Amazing, how far you really have come when you think about it! You would not be on this very level at this moment, if you didn't overcome all of those previous ones! Feel the pride of accomplishment and achievement behind those facts! That confidence will not only boost your self- esteem but will give you the needed motivation to take that next step upward. You realize, now, you can do it! Enjoy your climb, looking forward to seeing you reach the top!
