![]() Self-hypnosis is a great tool for goal setting and self-improvement. Most people are surprised at how easy it is to learn self-hypnosis and with minimal effort begin to reap the benefits. Self-hypnosis is usually thought of as a person listening to an audio tape, mp3, or other mass-produced media, intended to induce a willingness to absorb suggestions centered around a specific topic such as weight loss, stop smoking, etc. Unfortunately, this kind of hypnosis is generally prepared by someone who has never met you, often presenting unwanted, even unpleasant imagery, sounds and suggestions. For example, if you sunburn easily, that last thing you want to hear about is a slow walk on a sunny beach or if you had a bad experience recently with a seagull, the cry of a gull is not going to relax you, now will it? In these cases, the "self" in self-hypnosis simply means that you listen to it by yourself. How do you incorporate self-improvement into hypnosis? To be able to go about self- improvement there are specific aspects that should be addressed. Using hypnosis, the negative aspects that are serving as barriers to your improvement need to be eliminated first. These barriers most often are lack of motivation, lack of self-esteem, procrastination or will-power issues. Self- hypnosis scripting needs to be designed and created by you, being you will ultimately use and benefit from it. Unlike the mass-produced hypnosis audios, this is made for the exact purpose that you wish, including the precise words and phrases that have the most meaning to you. When a script is created by you to suit your own needs, it truly is self-hypnosis. The benefits derived could only be accomplished with such a personal, one-of-a-kind hypnosis. In this case, the "self" in self- hypnosis really does mean that you are hypnotized by yourself! Below is a short simple view of the self-hypnotic process. Though lots of variations of this method have been used, these are the shortest basic steps you have to go through in order to hypnotize yourself to accomplish self-improvement. 1. Prioritize your goals from the most important goal to the less important. I would recommend limiting yourself to 3 goals per session. You will want to be able to allow your subconscious mind to fully absorb your suggestions. 2. For each goal, you should formulate fitting suggestions which means you have to convert your goals into specific instructions to your subconscious mind on how to achieve each goal. Use positive wording that will bring about positive imagery for your subconscious to process. You can memorize these suggestions or record them for playback as your personal hypnosis audio. 3. Control your environment. Make sure that you will not be disturbed or distracted. Mute your cell phone and any other distracting elements. I often choose to do my sessions right before going to sleep. Others may find their quiet time is the middle of the afternoon or upon awakening. 4. Relaxation. Get yourself into a comfortable relaxing position. You can start your hypnotic induction by saying out loud the hypnotic words you have chosen, thinking of these words or listening to a hypnotic audio or CD customized for your hypnotic and goal fulfillment needs. (Note: There are many ways to relax and each individual will have their own preference, use whichever method you feel most comfortable with.) 5. Apply the hypnotic suggestions you have created for reaching the specific goal you are working on, say them out loud, think them or use the custom hypnotic audio or CD that you had recorded earlier. Before you begin your self-hypnotic exercises you should make a time schedule for it. Do your hypnotic sessions every day for at least 3 weeks. It has been scientifically proven that it takes 21 days for a habit to form in the subconscious mind. Repeat your suggestions as often as possible during the day as affirmations to yourself. This increases the subliminal suggestive nature to your subconscious mind by connecting your conscious thoughts with the hypnotic suggestions provided. After 3 weeks, measure your progress. Ask yourself. Are you closer to your goal now than you were before you started? If you answer ‘No’, to these questions, ask yourself more specifically what may be holding you back from achieving your goal. It is possible that you need to re-prioritize your goals and adjust your scripting to account for this barrier. (Do you need more motivation? Determination? Etc.) This is the only way you can find out if this method is really helping you in achieving your self-improvement goals. Remember also, that self-hypnosis is a resource tool, not a magic pill! It gives you the ability to tap into your best potential, but if the ability or knowledge is not stored in your mind, it cannot create it for you. For example: If your goal is to learn a new language. Hypnosis can assist you in retaining the translations and increase your memory recall thus making it an easier process for you, but you will have to actually study the language.
